Spring and summer are the most common seasons for allergies, not just for us but for our dogs, too. The pollens, grasses, bugs, and other irritants are out in full force, ready to wreak havoc on our sensitive pups. The coughing, sneezing, wheezing, running nose reactions we experience occur in our dogs but manifest differently.

When your dog’s body encounters an allergen, the body releases histamine to counter it. Histamine causes blood vessels to break, leaking fluid and swelling the surrounding tissue (hence the sneezing and running nose for humans). For dogs, these vessels surround the paws, groin, arm pits, and sides of their face – the most common scratchy areas! Paw licking, constant scratching, biting/chewing of the legs and groin, and irritated, red skin are just a few of the miserable symptoms dogs suffer with. (more…)
